Someone very dear to me got scarily ill this week and it brought to the front how fragile life is. I am pretty much wired to think and act as if life is short even if nobody is sick but when I heard about my friend, I started sprinting down the path of mad thoughts and bargaining – how they couldn’t die, I had so much I wanted to do with them, please don’t let them die, I have way more to talk with them about, a zillion more things to learn from them – Please do not take him! I need much more time to love him on this physical earth. I demand that he heal from this malady and get out of the hospital and go home and get back to normal. I wasn’t done spending time with him– not by a long shot. That urgency of what needed to be said, shared and explored flooded me. Now, I realize we can’t spend every waking minute as if someone we love might die any second but we can reach out more, ask more questions, check in regularly, find the time because we must, because we have to sponge our loved ones up. I don’t want to miss a moment with folks I adore because I am too busy. Busy is often a construct as is time. The phrase “make more time” is brilliant in its simplicity and intent. Don’t have enough time? Make more. Hug your people. Find out something about them you didn’t know. Do something with them that they enjoy. Be there. We’re all gonna die and we don’t exactly know when.
