“On the road again. I just can’t wait to be on the road again.” Willie Nelson

It’s that time of year when my thoughts turn to Maine. I am lucky enough to go back there every summer and sometimes stay until the falling leaves signal me to hightail it west before the snow flies. One of my very favorite joy-sparking things to do is to drive across the country by myself. Experiencing the land where I live, watching the terrain change from lush to whimsical to red rock and all the in-betweens and afterwards never gets old. Everything is possible in my car, in the middle of nowhere. The beauty and the vastness thrill me. I’m moving through space and time with all the windows down and my dog Esmeralda’s head is sticking out the back, black ears and jowls flapping as the air whizzes past. I crank my music, dance in the driver’s seat and let my emotions fly all around with my hair, this way and that. I think my deep thoughts and dive headlong into my yearning. The open road is salve for my soul. On the long stretches of asphalt from San Francisco to Blue Hill, I work myself out, figure out my place on the planet and search for the real reason I was plunked down on this good green earth.  I am happy and I know it, especially if the gas prices stay affordable.
